The M47 emerged during the Korean War by combining a modified earlier chassis with the T42 turret and T119 gun, alongside improved cooling, armour, and electrical equipment. Its service history extended well beyond the original medium-tank configuration. Proposed and trial variants included a 165 mm combat-engineer vehicle, a flamethrower tank, 105 mm gun conversions, Swingfire missiles, and a bridge system. French, Italian, Spanish, and Korean programs illustrate how allies could reuse the chassis with new weapons, engines, transmissions, recovery gear, or specialist equipment instead of treating the original design as fixed.
