M33 provides a physical link to the final evacuation from Gallipoli. Troops leaving the peninsula still faced Turkish positions in the mountains and trenches above the shore. Naval gunfire kept those positions under pressure while the withdrawal proceeded. M33 is also the starting point for the story of her sister ships and the Royal Navy's wider monitor force.
