The M class developed the L-class design for greater speed, with figures of 34 to 35 knots discussed. Its quoted endurance is 3,710 nautical miles at 15 knots, compared with 1,720 nautical miles at the same speed for the L class. The later R and V/W classes provide further comparisons, with the V/W figure put at about 3,500 nautical miles at 15 knots. The quoted ranges of Japanese destroyers before the Fubuki class fall short of the M-class figure. The earlier Acasta destroyers were capable ships, but lacked long-range hulls. Range was an important design advance alongside speed.

M-class endurance compared with earlier and later destroyers
A quoted range of 3,710 nautical miles at 15 knots makes endurance a major part of the M class's improvement over the L class.
