The British squadron still had to escape the archipelago after Najaden had been destroyed. Calypso took a position from which she could engage renewed gunboat attacks while Podargus and Flamer struggled off the ground under fire from batteries and gunboats. During the withdrawal at 3 a.m., gunboats sheltered behind rocks occupied positions that none of the British vessels could bring guns to bear on. Both captured brigs grounded and had to be abandoned. Stewart's dispatch says the British refused to burn the prizes because wounded men remained aboard. It also praises the surgeon's care for wounded men from both sides and acknowledges serious damage to the British hulls, masts and rigging.
