Luigi Durand de la Penne and Italy's Cold War destroyers

The opening links the destroyer's namesake and the 1941 Alexandria raid to a wider history of Italian Cold War destroyers and the maturing OTO Melara 76 mm.

Notes

Luigi Durand de la Penne was an Italian human-torpedo operator whose team attacked British capital ships in Alexandria Harbour in December 1941. Naming a modern destroyer after him connects the class to an earlier tradition of Italian naval raiding. The class also provides a route through Italy's wider Cold War destroyer history. Successive designs trace the OTO Melara 76 mm from troubled early installations to a mature weapon fitted in multiple layers. This opening sets up those linked stories before the detailed specifications begin.
