Luigi Cadorna from Calabria to Allied transport duty

Luigi Cadorna served at Calabria, covered North African convoys, carried supplies and troops, and later worked for the Allies as a transport.

Notes

Luigi Cadorna was laid down in September 1930, launched a year later, and commissioned in August 1933. That construction pace mattered amid French and Italian competition over fast cruisers. Her early operations included the Spanish Civil War, the occupation of Albania, mine laying, and the Battle of Calabria, also known as Punta Stilo, where she avoided a submarine attack and assisted her sister during boiler trouble. Limited fuel, available crews, and confidence in her protection kept her in reserve for part of the war. As the supply of North Africa became more urgent, she provided distant convoy cover and made emergency runs carrying fuel and ammunition. She later trained, moved troops, laid defensive fields near Taranto alongside the light cruiser Scipione Africano, surrendered with the fleet at Malta, and served the Allies as a transport and repatriation ship. Postwar Italy retained her as a training ship until 1951.
