The pre-Falklands reprieve for Fearless and Intrepid

The government reversed planned cuts to Fearless and Intrepid before the Falklands War, retaining heavy lift and amphibious command capacity.

Notes

The government reversed planned reductions to HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid before the Falklands War demonstrated their value. As landing platform docks, they could carry tanks, heavy equipment, landing craft, and substantial Royal Marines forces. They also provided command-and-control facilities needed to organize an amphibious operation far from established bases. Those functions could not be recreated quickly by a generic transport ship once a crisis began. The reversal preserved a capability that soon became central to an unforeseen campaign.
