Chapter ยท 32:39-35:47

USS Louisville as training ship, rescuer, and neutral gold carrier

Louisville's interwar service included antiaircraft training, two civilian rescues, and the neutral transport of British gold from South Africa.

Notes

A long association with antiaircraft training gave the ship and successive crews valuable experience before war. Her crew helped rescue an Alaskan fishing-boat crew after a collision, then assisted passengers when a sightseeing ferry capsized in Sydney. After war began in Europe, Louisville crossed U-boat-threatened waters with the American flag illuminated to advertise her neutrality. She collected $148 million in British gold at Simon's Town and carried it to New York for deposit in the United States. These assignments show how a large cruiser could support training, rescue, and financial logistics between fleet exercises.
