Why lost Japanese records limit claims about wartime technology

Destroyed records and scarce Japanese-language sources leave major gaps in what historians can prove about the Imperial Japanese Navy's people and technology.

Notes

British and American naval development can be traced through officers and surviving archives, while comparable Japanese relationships remain harder to prove. A possible Japanese counterpart to Admiral Henderson may have influenced both carrier development and the Yamato class, yet the evidence is too fragmentary for the same confidence. Many wartime documents were destroyed, published English sources are scarce, and even relevant Japanese books can be difficult to locate. Absence of evidence cannot establish that Japanese research or technology did not exist. Recovering family papers and older publications may be essential to reconstructing the institutional story.
