Lourenço de Almeida had years of command experience

Lourenço's age concealed an apprenticeship at sea and a record of independent operations before Chaul.

Notes

Lourenço de Almeida was about twenty-eight when he died, but he had accompanied his father on campaigns since adolescence. He had already helped establish a Portuguese position in Ceylon and commanded forces in his mid-twenties. At Cannanore he destroyed a much larger fleet belonging to the ruler of Calicut. This background explains why his command at Chaul was more than simple family patronage.
