The proposed Lord Nelson would carry triple 14-inch turrets forward and aft alongside 9.2-inch secondary guns. It could also receive small-tube boilers if the early machinery trials succeeded. Its construction and testing would give the Admiralty experience before designing Dreadnought. That experience would join the influence of Tsushima, Cuniberti's ideas, South Carolina and Satsuma. The later ship would therefore build on an altered predecessor as well as on international developments.
