The class displaced 6,150 tons and measured 335 feet long with an 87-foot beam and a draft just under ten feet. Two triple-expansion engines produced 2,310 indicated horsepower for a top speed of six and a half knots. The broad, shallow Abercrombie-derived hull carried a twin 12-inch turret, six inches of belt armor, ten and a half inches on the turret, eight inches on the barbette, and a two-inch deck. Two 12-pounders and two three-pounders formed the original secondary battery, with a two-pounder added later. Six-inch guns were then fitted for defense against destroyers because the 12-pounders lacked range and stopping power. The late-war plan called for one BL 18-inch Mark I gun on Lord Clive and General Wolfe; Prince Eugene was also considered.
