A disaster-relief hospital is not a permanent health system

Acute trauma care and long-term treatment require different staff, facilities, supplies, and planning.

Notes

A spaceborne hospital or disaster-relief ship might handle immediate casualties well, but that does not make it suitable for years of counseling, dialysis, transplants, and chronic illness. A mixed population exposed to severe trauma is likely to develop both physical and psychological needs over time. The emergency department attached to a warship cannot substitute for a continuing health service. Staffing, facilities, and consumable supplies must be organized around recurring care rather than a single surge of casualties.
