Long-range hits and capital-ship reputation

Scharnhorst's hit on HMS Glorious and Bismarck's destruction of HMS Hood are considered alongside target readiness and ship-type context.

Notes

Two dramatic successes do not by themselves prove German battleship superiority. Scharnhorst's long-range hit on HMS Glorious mattered, but the aircraft carrier was not being operated sensibly at the time. Bismarck's destruction of HMS Hood also requires the context that Hood was a battlecruiser fighting a battleship. Both examples warn against turning memorable outcomes into broad performance judgments without considering tactical circumstances and ship type.
