How the Long Range Desert Group raided

John Laffin's Raiders follows an LRDG patrol using reconnaissance, familiar British trucks, concentrated fire, and concealed withdrawal against Axis road traffic.

Notes

The account follows Captain Hay's G1 patrol after an Italian aircraft spotted it near the Benghazi road and called in a German Junkers 87. The patrol survived the bombing and strafing, hid overnight in a familiar wadi, and reconnoitred a vehicle park. At dusk it approached openly in British trucks, which German and Italian troops ignored because Axis forces commonly used captured vehicles. The raiders then concentrated machine-gun and anti-tank-rifle fire, threw grenades into the huts, and withdrew before the defenders could organize. They spent the next day hidden under camouflage, then attacked a petrol tanker that evening and returned without casualties. The closing comparison links this mix of mobility, firepower, support, and opportunism to the special forces support group used in Afghanistan and Iraq.
