China and India claim ASW weapons with substantially longer ranges than earlier ship-launched systems. The Chinese Yu-8's claimed 50-kilometre range suggests attacks on convergence-zone contacts or unusually long direct-path detections. An earlier US proposal would have adapted Tomahawk into a cruise missile that deployed sonobuoys in the indicated target area and monitored them while circling overhead. It would release its torpedo after those sensors supplied a suitable target. The reason for abandoning that proposal is left uncertain, with practicality and expense offered as alternatives.

Long-range ASW proposals combine missile reach with local sensing
The Yu-8 range claim and a proposed sonobuoy-carrying Tomahawk illustrate the sensing problem behind distant ASW attacks.
