Twelve centuries of peace and combat readiness

A 1,200-year peace shows why forces must accept costly, unpopular training if they are to remain ready for a sudden war.

Notes

The Commonwealth's long peace makes wartime standards difficult to sustain because realistic exercises are expensive, embarrassing, and politically exposed. Commanders can be tempted to seek a quiet life when newspapers, continuous news coverage, and public critics punish visible mistakes. Avoiding peacetime humiliation can therefore create much greater costs when war suddenly returns. The fictional 1,200-year peace shows that readiness depends on accepting scrutiny and training failures before lives are at stake.
