Long Beach, armour, and cruiser lineage

A claim that USS Long Beach was the last armoured cruiser prompts a useful distinction between thick structural steel and purpose-designed armour.

Notes

A former engineering sailor describes USS Long Beach as the last armoured cruiser because the ship carried an armour belt despite its postwar lineage and mission. That label requires caution because thick structural steel is not automatically ballistic armour. Even one-inch plate may fail to stop 12.7 mm heavy-machine-gun fire when its material and arrangement serve structural purposes. The comparison with Olympia shows how classification and visible plate thickness can create a false impression of protection. Ship lineage, structural scantlings, and combat protection must be assessed separately.
