Triton collected deep-water samples in Lombok Strait to examine density, temperature, and other water conditions. The boat's own buoyancy supplied an additional measurement because she would be lighter in denser water and heavier in less dense water. Comparing that behavior with known constants allowed an estimate of local conditions. The crew combined the estimate with analysis of the water sample, although Beach reserved much of the wider hydrographic and oceanographic work from his report.

Measuring water density through Triton's buoyancy
Triton's buoyancy response helped estimate water density, supplementing the analysis of deep-water samples collected in Lombok Strait.
