Logistics defined the Mediterranean and Caucasus

Operational ambitions in the Caucasus and around Suez ran into the same constraint: forces could not outrun their supply lines.

Notes

The German drive toward the Caucasus and repeated approaches toward Suez illustrate how logistics constrained every side. Each advance lengthened the route over which fuel, food, ammunition, and transport had to move. The defender could exploit the moment when that chain reached its practical limit. Tactical possibilities therefore mattered only if sustainment could reach the advancing force.
