Why littoral danger is not a new naval lesson

Ukraine's uncrewed craft update a long-standing warning about operating close to a defended coast rather than creating an entirely new prohibition.

Notes

Claims that Ukraine newly proved ships cannot operate within 100 miles of land overlook more than a century of coastal threats. Mines, aircraft, coastal artillery, submarines, torpedo boats, and explosive craft have long made coastlines dangerous; the Falklands exclusion zone already reflected that scale of risk. Even Age of Sail frigates normally formed squadrons in contested waters despite operating alone where danger was low. The practical lesson is to operate farther out when possible and to enter the inner littoral with a properly supported task force rather than a lone ship.
