Literature studies, systematic reviews, and primary research

Different departments may label a literature study as a systematic, systemic, thematic, or prior-research review, but the dissertation still needs enough evidence and a defensible contribution of primary research.

Notes

Departments use several overlapping names for evidence-led reviews, and students should concentrate on the required work rather than become distracted by terminology. At bachelor's and master's level, the central task is to assemble a substantial evidence base and identify what counts as the project's primary or original research. Losing access to a laboratory changes the available methods without removing the need for a defensible research contribution. Master's work differs chiefly in the expected depth of critical analysis and the larger word count available for it.
