Rescue under threat and I-175's later loss

Destroyers interrupt rescue to answer fresh torpedo warnings, while I-175 escapes the Gilberts only to be lost after a radar detection on its tenth patrol.

Notes

Destroyers began recovering Liscome Bay survivors but had to react when torpedo wakes and another contact suggested I-175 might still be nearby. The screen returned to anti-submarine work, showing how a submarine could complicate rescue even after its target had sunk. I-175 survived the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign despite the wider Japanese submarine losses. On its tenth patrol, a radar detection by USS New Jersey preceded the boat's loss on 4 February 1944. Following the attacker beyond its best-known success keeps its own operational risk visible.
