During operations around the Gilbert Islands, Liscome Bay served as guide in a formation that prioritized collision avoidance over zigzagging. When USS Franks left to investigate a beacon, the screen was not rearranged, and the formation's turn presented the escort carrier broadside to I-175. A torpedo struck beside the after engine room and detonated the bomb magazine, destroying the stern, igniting aircraft and fuel, and sinking the ship in twenty-three minutes. The 702 dead included Rear Admiral Henry Mullinnix and Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller.
