Replacing Hood and Prince of Wales at Denmark Strait

An accelerated building programme substitutes Temeraire and Anson for Hood and Prince of Wales, changing both protection and turret-reliability assumptions.

Notes

The two-year acceleration is applied to the Battle of the Denmark Strait by substituting the second Lion, Temeraire, and HMS Anson for Hood and the newly completed Prince of Wales. The pair would bring a modern fast battleship and a more worked-up King George V-class ship to the engagement. Lion's triple turrets carried less mechanical risk than the quadruple mounts that troubled Prince of Wales. No result is assumed. The example shows how an earlier procurement timetable changes both the forces and the technical risks present at the encounter.
