The Saintes popularized rather than invented line-breaking

Earlier seventeenth-century battles supplied precedents, but the Saintes gave the Royal Navy an influential recent demonstration.

Notes

The Saintes is often treated as the birth of breaking the line, although a simple invention story does not fit earlier precedents. Commanders had attempted related maneuvers before 1782. Niels Juel at the Battle of Koge Bay and Michiel de Ruyter during the Four Days' Battle provide earlier examples. What changed at the Saintes was the visibility and institutional influence of a successful recent case for the Royal Navy. Tactical innovation often develops through remembered precedents rather than appearing in a single moment.
