Light railways carried supplies forward and casualties back

A second War Department Light Railways book discussion follows protected tractors, vulnerable engine sheds, trench rotation, and casualty evacuation.

Notes

The WDLR companion volume expands the earlier railway map into equipment and operating practice. It shows petrol-electric Simplex tractors, protected wagons, repair facilities, and engine sheds that became valuable artillery and air targets. The railways supplied troops moving through a planned cycle between the front line and reserve positions despite mud and inadequate roads. Trains that carried ammunition and food forward could return with wounded personnel, often reaching casualty-clearing stations more reliably than ambulances on damaged roads. The network worked in both directions, sustaining combat power on the way in and medical evacuation on the way out.
