Task-group frigates and independent pickets need different designs

Light frigates and small light cruisers illustrate how ships with useful formation roles differ from larger vessels expected to hold an outer station.

Notes

A light frigate operating inside a task group is distinguished here from a larger frigate or destroyer expected to hold an outer picket station. In this comparison, the frigate concentrates on anti-submarine warfare and the destroyer on air warfare. Arethusa- and Atlanta-class light cruisers illustrate useful formation ships whose role did not require fighting larger cruisers or capital ships alone. Sending one against a Deutschland-class Panzerschiff would have assigned it a different kind of task. Both classes fought effectively in their assigned roles, but they were not expected to do the same work as their larger Town- and Brooklyn-class counterparts. The shared light-cruiser label therefore concealed substantial differences in capability and employment.
