Chapter · 30:23-33:18

What a modern light frigate is for

A light frigate is presented as a credible low-to-medium-threat warship that expands numbers, fills force gaps, or creates a new capability.

Notes

A modern light frigate is a warship with enough defensive capability for presence and deterrence in low- to medium-threat conditions. Sending one alone into a high-threat environment is judged unwise. Defeating it would require enough deliberate firepower to make an accidental sinking implausible, which gives its presence diplomatic weight. Such ships can add numbers, fill a gap in an existing force or provide a capability a navy previously lacked. Australia's Mogami purchase illustrates the first use, while Type 31 arguably serves all of them for Britain. In waters such as the Baltic or Black Sea, the aim is a ship powerful enough to demand attention whose loss would be less economically disruptive than that of a much more expensive combatant.
