Light armour and the danger of detonations inside vehicles

APC protection is compared with destroyer gun-mount armour to explain the tradeoff between penetration resistance and shell initiation.

Notes

Thin protection can be penetrated by many weapons. Increasing its thickness can also make it more likely to initiate larger shells that detonate inside an occupied compartment. The comparison links modern armoured personnel carriers with destroyer mounts and turrets before the Second World War. Armour thickness therefore creates a tradeoff between penetration resistance and shell initiation; neither choice guarantees the safety of the occupants.
