From Príncipe Alfonso to Libertad and Galicia

The light cruiser's successive names trace Spain's monarchy, republic, civil war, and postwar political order.

Notes

In September 1937, Libertad and Méndez Núñez were escorting four Republican merchant ships when Baleares found them. The light cruiser's changing identity tracks Spain's political upheaval. She began under the monarchy as Príncipe Alfonso, took the name Libertad during the Republic, and became Galicia after the war. Those identities place regime change directly onto a warship's service record. They also explain why the same hull appears under different names in accounts of Spain's twentieth-century navy.
