A later rendering shows the design after further development and depicts many apparent portholes along the hull. Some openings may have disappeared from the final plan. Others may have been painted shapes intended to look like portholes from a distance while the belt remained solid. Artwork for an unbuilt warship therefore requires caution when used as evidence for the final construction plan.

Why the portholes in a later rendering may mislead
Some apparent portholes in a later Lexington rendering may have been deleted or painted rather than openings through the armour belt.
