Why Lexington's 90-aircraft capacity can mislead

The Lexington class's quoted 90-aircraft capacity included machines hung from the hangar ceiling or carried in parts, not 90 aircraft immediately ready for flight.

Notes

The quoted complement for a Lexington-class carrier changed according to what counted as a carried aircraft. An earlier figure of roughly 50 or 60 is contrasted with a nominal capacity of 90 achieved partly by hanging aircraft from the hangar ceiling. That larger total also included airframes carried in parts, so it did not mean 90 machines were immediately available for operations. The comparison separates storage capacity from the number of aircraft ready to fly.
