Lepanto and the unusual sovereignty of the Order of Malta

Nick Fields's Lepanto 1571 opens onto the modern Order of Malta, a landless religious and humanitarian body that retains unusual sovereign attributes.

Notes

The book is especially useful for its background on the Hospitallers and their institutional survival. The modern Order of Malta combines a lay religious identity with hospitals, clinics, shelters, ambulance services, and other humanitarian work across many countries. It also maintains diplomatic relations, observer status at the United Nations, and its own passports, stamps, and registration plates despite possessing no national territory. That unusual present-day status makes the order's medieval development more than a preface to the battle of Lepanto.
