Chapter ยท 0:00-2:03

Lepanto as an alliance command problem

The opening treats Lepanto as an extraordinary coalition-command success and asks how a politically tangled galley fleet managed to fight as one force.

Notes

Lepanto is introduced through the political and personal ties that held both fleets together. The Holy League depended on patronage, finance, family connections, and competing sovereign interests. The Ottoman force also rested on layered relationships instead of monolithic control. Either system could have broken into recrimination or disobedience once battle began. The unusual achievement was getting such a complicated command structure to work at sea.
