The United States entered 1942 without enough destroyers to cover every threatened route. Some older ships had been scrapped, fifty had gone to Britain in the destroyers-for-bases agreement, and available escorts were concentrated in the Pacific or on priority Atlantic convoys. British and Commonwealth production supplied Flower-class corvettes and River-class frigates for American coastal and Caribbean service. These contributions show that wartime assistance flowed in both directions.
