Leipzig emerged from repair reclassified as a training ship, with four boilers removed to make room for additional trainees. A Royal Navy comparison puts extra accommodation in lightweight superstructure instead of sacrificing machinery, so this conversion further reduced an already damaged cruiser's performance. Leipzig nonetheless escorted Lützow, provided artillery support during Operation Barbarossa, and joined Baltic operations around the Estonian islands and Tirpitz. A meningitis outbreak interrupted training, but she became flagship of the training fleet in 1942 and resumed escort and mining duties in 1944. The mix of reduced machinery and frontline assignments shows the pressure created by limited German naval resources.
