Leipzig's pre-war Atlantic task-force rehearsal

A 1939 Atlantic exercise paired Leipzig with larger ships, destroyers, and U-boats, revealing the kind of combined task group Germany hoped to employ.

Notes

Leipzig's early service included Baltic training, Spanish non-intervention patrols, and a mid-1939 Atlantic exercise with Gneisenau, Deutschland, destroyers, and U-boats. The exercise rehearsed the kind of wartime formation Germany hoped to use: a fast capital ship, cruisers, escorts, and submarines. Germany had only 22 destroyers when World War II began, which limited the escort strength available to such a group. Even with that constraint, the formation would have posed a greater threat to the Royal Navy than the smaller combinations Germany later deployed.
