Full-load displacement, length, and draft show that Leipzig and Nürnberg were far from identical sisters. Nürnberg's greater displacement and altered dimensions make the conventional class label misleading in this interpretation. Leipzig is closer to the preceding Königsberg class in full-load displacement than to Nürnberg, while Nürnberg is appreciably longer. The ships make more sense as successive batches that retained the same design philosophy and many of its weaknesses.

Why Leipzig and Nürnberg are not straightforward sisters
Displacement and hull comparisons make Leipzig and Nürnberg look more like successive iterations of German cruiser policy than a uniform class.
