Legacy point defence and a conservative Slava design

The Slava combined capable 1970s systems with older point-defence technology whose upgrade path had effectively run out.

Question

Were Slava's weapons fundamentally obsolete or unreliable from the start?

Short answer

Some point-defence equipment aged badly, but the P-500 and other systems were credible when selected; delays and limited upgrade capacity were the larger problem.

Notes

Osa-M was serviceable when introduced, but it had little room for growth and eventually needed replacement rather than another upgrade. Technical difficulties left it widespread because the Soviet Navy lacked an easy point-defence alternative. P-500 was a credible early-1970s anti-ship weapon, though delays in that missile, S-300F, and AK-130 aged the package before the ships entered service. The Slava design was conservative in this sense: it combined systems that had been stabilised instead of gambling on a riskier set.
