A legacy pom-pom still downs a veteran Condor raider

An old merchant-ship pom-pom shot down an experienced Fw 200 Condor crew, showing why obsolete-looking weapons could remain operationally useful.

Notes

Royal Navy evaluation could not treat the Bofors as proof that every pom-pom had become worthless because older guns were still producing results. In a July 1941 engagement, a merchant ship carrying what may have been one of the oldest pom-pom types shot down an Fw 200 Condor flown by an experienced raider. The aircraft had already sunk or damaged numerous ships, yet a small number of well-placed 40 mm hits ended its attack. The example supports retaining available weapons in secondary roles while newer systems were still being manufactured and distributed.
