Captain Tim Granger learns that Constitution will be decommissioned five years earlier than he expected. He suspects political pressure for military cuts, and the admiral concedes that he is probably right. Granger considers the ship fit for service and argues that humanity survived the earlier Swarm war only because the enemy unexpectedly withdrew. Decades without another attack do not reassure him. The admiral describes Constitution as an outdated collection of mismatched parts with an unpromising crew, and offers Granger the prospect of a newer command. Their disagreement places readiness concerns beside the age of the ship and the captain's personal attachment to it.
