Why heavier turrets strain a Leander conversion

A turret-weight comparison shows how an attractive increase in gun count can still overburden a 6,500-ton light-cruiser hull.

Notes

Replacing four lighter twin 6-inch mounts with three triple turrets initially appears attractive because it adds a gun and frees one position for a dual-purpose weapon. A quick calculation compares roughly 91-ton twin mounts with 161-ton triples and corrects the initial impression. Three triples would add about 120 tons rather than save weight. That increase is difficult to absorb on a 6,500-ton Leander-class hull and would create stability and topweight concerns. The arrangement works in plan view, but turret mass, displacement, and hull margins make it impractical.
