Leander rakes three French ships and suffers fourteen wounded

A 50-gun fourth-rate exploits the disrupted line to rake Peuple Souverain, Orient, and Franklin at a remarkably small cost.

Notes

Leander fires into Peuple Souverain while moving into the gap its movement has opened. The 50-gun ship then takes a position between Franklin and Orient, adding rakes of both to its attack on Peuple Souverain. Despite entering between an 80-gun ship and a 120-gun first-rate, Leander suffers fourteen wounded and no dead. Alexander, a later-arriving third-rate, suffers 72 casualties. That small cost for Leander underlines how little return fire the French can bring to bear on the fourth-rate exploiting their broken formation.
