A 20-knot Leander successor for fleet screening

A viewer balances hull length, topweight, quick-firing guns, and improved machinery to turn a Leander follow-on into a faster scout and torpedo-craft counter.

Notes

A viewer proposes lengthening the Leander design if necessary to reach about 20 knots. The armour and battery would be rebalanced to reduce topweight while providing more numerous, faster-firing weapons against torpedo craft. Improved boilers or vertical triple-expansion machinery would support the extra speed. The resulting cruiser is intended for scouting and fleet-screen duties rather than simply reproducing the original class. The proposal captures a recurring late-19th-century tradeoff among speed, protection, firepower, and machinery development.
