HMS Leander first tried unsuccessfully to help Culloden off the shoal. The 50-gun fourth rate then moved down the French line and took a position from which she could rake Franklin and L'Orient. Her opponents carried about 80 and 120 guns respectively, while Leander's own battery included 24-pounders and 12-pounders. The attack depended on position and willingness to engage much heavier ships, extending the pressure on the French center.
