Leahy and Bainbridge design fit

A design section compares Leahy and nuclear-powered Bainbridge through construction timing, displacement, sensors, missiles, ASROC, and shipyard origins.

Notes

Bainbridge was laid down before Leahy even though she was a modified nuclear version of the same design. A destroyer leader is defined here as a larger vessel that retains destroyer framing, structure, protection, and design assumptions while taking on some cruiser roles. Leahy's 7,800-ton full-load displacement, Terrier launchers, ASROC, guns, later Harpoons, and close-in weapons show what that compromise produced. Bainbridge adds displacement, length, nuclear endurance, and a more energy-intensive sensor fit without leaving the underlying design family. Capability and size alone therefore do not settle whether a ship is a destroyer or a cruiser.
