Why leadership depends on the crisis

Historical reputation often depends on whether a leader’s particular strengths matched the crisis at hand.

Notes

Historical leaders do not divide neatly into wholly good and wholly bad categories. Most commanders combine useful and harmful traits, and their reputations often reflect whether that mixture suited the problems they faced. A strength in one crisis can become a weakness when circumstances demand a different kind of judgment or organization. Raleigh is valuable as a case study because his inspirational abilities could be assets in one setting and liabilities in another.
