How LCS requirements defeated fleet-scale efficiency

The Littoral Combat Ship case links transformational technology, extreme speed, modular missions, and two competing hulls to lost fleet mass.

Notes

The LCS concept combined high speed and modular missions with the promise of a mass-produced hull. Buying two different hulls divided the production run and required separate arrangements for training, parts, and systems integration. A 40-knot-plus requirement also shaped the ships' internal layout alongside the space reserved for mission modules. Those choices made conversion into a conventional frigate a substantial redesign. The alternatives suggested here include lower speed, more space, stronger hulls, and proper sacrificial anodes, while retaining the caveat that either design would still need changes to become useful in a different role.
