LCS retirement changes the arithmetic of future frigate totals

Keeping 25 LCS during a transition need not imply permanently replacing ten planned frigates with ten LCS.

Notes

A plan to retain 25 LCS is discussed alongside the alternative assumption of 15 LCS and 58 frigates. One possible explanation is that the extra LCS would provide temporary coverage until more frigates arrived. Fort Worth, commissioned in 2012, illustrates the service-life problem: it would be 43 years old in 2055. Treating the same LCS inventory as fixed throughout a 30-year plan therefore overlooks retirements and replacement. The transitional explanation remains a possibility, with the plan's intent left uncertain.
